An Apple a Day

My daughter decides she wants a laptop for christmas. Now, I love my child but I'm not spending $700 on a laptop for her to spill juice on it and fry the damn thing. Then it's just one more PC for me to have to play tech support for.. and I hate playing tech support.

A friend of mine suggests Retrobox.com, cheap refurbed computers, never had a problem with them, etc. Good idea. So I go, I look, and I find a g3 ibook for $250.00. SOLD. So much rather purchase and Apple.

A week later it shows up and my isn't it pretty. So I call up Apple, explain the situation and ask how I can get an OS for my lovely little laptop. Give them the serial #, and they order me the replacement power supply and install disks.

Two days later the power supply shows up with no plug thing.. Grr.. Call them back, another $10 later I have the plug.

Then I order some Ice Creme, polish for white ibooks and polish the shit out of it to make it look nice for my little one.

Two weeks goes by, no software. So I call Apple, explain the situation, the next day I get a call back, an appology and a tracking number.

Woohoo. So here we are, three weeks before xmas, I plug in the ibook, put in the CD, and whirrrr here comes the install screen. I get to the point where it asks me what drive I want to install it on and low and behold there is no drive listed.. So I call Apple Care. The guy on the phone walks me through some stuff and tells me that the hard drive must be dead. Can he order me one? No. Ok, so I call the company I bought it from and leave many nasty messages unable to get through to a real person. Then I go and order another harddrive. Finally get through to the company, who tells me send back the harddrive I ordered, they are shipping me a replacement.

I get my purchased harddrive and decide to install it anyway.. Download the 20+ page book on how to do this, sit down and begin. I take out about 7 screws when I flip it over to find the middle torq screw is completely stripped.. I try pliers but it makes it worse..

So here I am, less than two weeks from Christmas with a broken laptop in pieces on my kitchen table that I've been wrestling with since OCTOBER. At my wits end, I go to the Concierge site, make an appointment at the Genius bar, pack up my pieces and go to the Freehold Raceway Mall.

I show the guy my problem.
"We'd normally ask you to put it back together, but.."
"We understand the problem, we can't fix it here, we need to send it out.."
"It could take 7-10 days to come back to you, it may not be back until after Christmas."
"There's a $292 charge to fix it.."

JUST FIX IT. I leave the nice man with my ibook and leave, stressed out totally now because I just dropped $300 I didn't have and I still may not make it back by Christmas. Every now and again I say to myself "I should have just spend $600 on a Dell Laptop..."

Saturday I call tech support.. "Your computer is at the apple store waiting to be shipped to the depot.."
Monday I call tech support... "Your computer is at the apple store waiting to be shipped to the depot.."
So after that I call the store..

"Oh, didn't you get my message?"
"Umm. no."
"Oh, well I put your computer back together, and tried to install Jaguar on it (Mind you apple care sent me 10.0.0) and I ran the disk utility and formatted the hard drive and it installed just fine. It's up and running."
"REALLY?!?!"
"Yeah, the airport card isn't being recognized, but I'll take a look at that too."
"REALLY?!?!? I can come pick it up?!?! It works?!!?!"
"Yeah sure, give me a little to look at your airport card and you can come get it."

So I'm like beside myself now. I go the next day to get it, and he even replaced the missing rubber feet on the bottom.. installed Jaguar, ran diagnostics on the harddrive, and reseated and set up the airport card.. the whole thing purrs well like a Jaguar..

So I take it from him and he smiles, "Oh, let me call the depot and have them reverse the charges on your card, because we didnt sent it out there will be no charge.. Youre $300 is best spend somewhere else than fixing this old thing I'm sure."

So I buy a screwed up old ibook from somewhere on the web, I take it apart, into pieces, drop it off at the store and they fix it, replace parts, upgrade the OS and hand it back with a smile FOR FREE. FOR FREE.

I love Apple.

(no subject)

Monday on my way home I went shopping. For some reason I thought I'd make stuffed cabbage. Well, by the time I faught my way through Acme, and traffic to home, I really didn't want to do anything.. So I started to make them, and then gave up, some betty crocker chicken pot pie in a box.

So Tuesday I took a half day to get the child prepared for trick or treating. I figured I'd have the time to attempt this recipe again.

Now, we were at his mother's over the summer and his sister in law called for his mom's recipe, which is how I know he likes stuffed cabbage. I'm Irish and Polish, I should be able to handle some cabbage, right? And of course the straw on Monday that broke my back was "Why are you using that?" "My mom doesn't make it that way.." ARGGH. So it went in the trash on Tuesday.

I got a new recipe for Slovak Style Stuffed Cabbage. 3 hours later it was done, but we didnt have time to eat because we had to go direct traffic for the trick or treaters. (There's a whole FD/FA turf war thing that happened, I'll try to post about it later). So at 9 we come home and heat up my VERY FIRST attempt at anything cabbage. I was freaking out because I hate trying to cook for him because I always feel like I'm not good enough.. but I'm working on that. Chief came over for dinner too. They both LOVED it. Rave compliments, and a lot of "Wow, I've never had it like this before, but it's awesome!" and they both even brought some to work the next day for lunch.

So I survived my first attempt at cooking cabbage.

The whole cooking thing is so stressful for me.. It was so much easier when Corrine told me "Wow Mama, you make the best hot dogs in the whole world!" and Betty Crocker Chicken in a Box was "AWESOME". Now I have to content with the momma's boy / used to cook for a living combination, and when you're NOT a cook, and you make an attempt to be domestic and be the good little wifeypoo who has dinner on the table.. well.. its hard to live up to expectations sometimes, especially when those expectations are yours to begin with.

Life continues...

Things are quiet and calm. This weekend was productive. Corrine and I helped run the 6th Grade Trip Fundraiser of Mums and Baked Good sale, that is after Thursday night her and two of her friends helped me make homemade chocolate dragon lollipops, the dragon is the school mascot.

After that Dada picked her up, and Chris and I went to Barnegat to pick up our garage doors, then to home depot to buy a ceiling fan and light fixture for the man room and a new light for the kitchen. Then his cousin got sick and could not go with him to the Jets game on Sunday, so he sat next to me on the couch and made like 10 phone calls to beg people to go with him.. I sat there sullenly thinking, how far down on the list does he have to go to ask ME? Which he did eventually, my response was "Well I wanted to go until I realized how far down on the list I was.." We don't fight, we don't even argue. Somewhere along the line I forgot how, and now I do this mature and calm discussion of my feelings thing.. I understand that 9 months of dating does not change someone easily who has been single for like 5 years, the gear shift from thinking in "me" mode to "us" mode doesn't come that easily to some.. Anyway, we got through it calmly, rationally, and maturely, and then went to light shit on fire in the back yard and get drunk with neighbors. :)

Sunday I did end up going to the game and had a really good time actually. Thank you Dad for teaching me the rules of football when I was a kid so that I can follow the game. Being in the 11th row helped too, because I could actually see the lines on the field to know a first down when I saw one.

The Jets won, which was an added bonus so everyone went home in a good mood.

I will have to post pictures of the new doors. They will take much work to get the paint stripped, wood fixed, and stain them and hang them, but it will be a work of love and I'm sure they will look awesome in the end. :)

I'm still not allowed to have a wedding at the head, and I say it only because it came up in conversation again yesterday, so I calmly said "Fine, if we ever get to that point, I'll settle on whatever you want to do." Which is a total double edged thing to say, but I was tired and didn't feel like getting into it.

Backyard

Ok.

Here is a picture of the backyard when I first bought the house, April 2004. This is the edge of the property line on the right side of the house. Backyard 2004.

Then, we removed four or five trees from this area, all of which were dead. One they said was almost petrified it was such a pain to cut down. There's also a picture of my Lu Face sniffing around. Backyard 2006

Here we have the center of the backyard, the two large trees which were being slowly suffocated by poison ivy. Center of yard 2004

Chris killed the poison ivy in the fall, I think we took out another 2 or three trees behind these two as well. Center of Yard 2006. It's a closer shot than the inital one, but we cleaned out a lot behind it, and you can see all the dead poison ivy hanging from the tree in this one. Here's another recent shot of that area too, Center of Yard 2, 2006

Finally, here is the left side of the yard in 2004 Left of Yard 2004.

I cut down many prickly bushes in this corner, there was a big difference in the amount of shit in that corner from April 2004 to October 2006 that you really can't see.. I should have taken some before shots this year I guess.

Anyway, here's that corner now with our lovely new shed! Photo of left corner.

You can see we cut down a bunch of trees, I think 4 from this corner between 04 and 06 and made the yard considerably bigger before putting the shed in.

Here's another photo of the shed.

I will have to take some pictures of the inside of the garage too before we start renovating that.

Domesticated

So Tuesday I went to Target b/c the $20 in my daughter's purse was burning a hole, we HAD to have Bratz Babies, which I personally think look like fodder for a Jerry Springer show. After that we went grocery shopping, where I had printed out some coupons from the internet, and printed out my shopping list in excel. I did this only because if I think of dinners to make for the week, then shop, then for the rest of the week I already kind of know what to make for dinner. If I do this any other way, then I'm usually at a loss and end up not cooking at all. So at 7:30 I returned home, and began boiling water for pasta, heating up sauce and grilling chicken simotaneously putting away groceries and answering a ton of questions, while thinking to myself "the laundry in the drier needs to be folded". So after my illustrious boyfriend asked where each item went while attempting to help put away groceries, then dragged me into the spare room to show off the two boxes he unloaded (pat pat, here's your treat), finally completeing dinner, folding the laundry (hes snoring on the couch) and getting the rest of the groceries away, I was FINALLY able to sit down at about 8:30PM. At which point, he woke up to eat dinner.

It's Friday, 3:00 closing, jeans day, and I don't have to cook tonight. :) Yee-haw. Going to home depot with my mom, I want to build a shelf in the den above the windows, paint it white, and then hang white sheer curtains from the underside of it, I think that would look awesome.

Sheds

Would you like an A Frame shed, a Quaker Shed, a Hywall Shed or a Mini Barn?

Collapse )

Ok, so now we're putting off purchasing the shed until next weekend so we can go out to Lancaster and look at the different types of sheds before purchasing one. That way we can pick our shed, pick our colors, pick our features and hand a check over for half.

2-3 weeks from next weekend puts us at the end of September though. Hmm. Oh well, they'll have to build the man room when it's cold out, during DEER & FOOTBALL SEASON, OH NO! *eg*

Weee. Mime

Sounds pretty accurate to me.

You scored as III - The Empress. The Empress is a maternal symbol. She is the mother figure who loves, nurtures and protects.
She will protect you, she will always be there when you are in trouble. When you fall over and graze your knee, the Empress will kiss it better.
Yet she is not a weak figure. Her compassion is strength. If her children are threatened she will stop at nothing to protect them. If well aspected in a Tarot spread, the Empress can symbolise security, protection and unconditional love. If badly aspected it can represent over-protectiveness, fear of risk taking and refusal to face the real world.
